Compressive strength of solid clay brickwork of masonry bridges: Estimate through Schmidt Hammer tests

Theoretical approaches and code formulas assume the compressive strength of solid clay brickwork as a function bricks mortar. Such an approach is not so easy to be applied in practice since components may identified only by means indirect testing through rebound hammers or penetrometers. Since largely depends on brick properties, mortar playing minor role, low detailed fast estimate deduced from only. In this paper, type-N Schmidt hammer, i.e. standard one for concrete, arch bridges industrial facilities. Due higher quality materials used these cases, basis specific calibration curve, hammer demonstrated provide affected ±25% error. Relying large data base, it showed that other mainly residential buildings, such applicable due lower larger scattering mechanical properties.
